Dan Ackerman of CNET gave his opinion today on the Big O and Dukes show on WJFK based out of Washington DC. From the sounds of it Dan Ackerman did not sound too positive about the new OnLive Gaming on Demand system. His main concern was that the amount of bandwidth required to keep the games going in a quality manner. Dan’s quote:
It can’t possibly work.
It’s snake oil. It’s impossible.
Dan seemed skeptical of OnLive. Dan Ackerman thought that the concept is great, but just didnt see it working becuase of the bandwidth and possible lag. Dan Ackerman compared that they cant keep Twitter up and running what thinks that OnLive can keep their systems up and running all the time.

Venture Beat sat down with Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime to talk of the threat of Onlive.com’s announcement of their soon to be relased games on demand system. Right off the bat Venture beat asked what Reggie Fills-Aime thought of the predicament that some say Onlive could end the use of thick game consoles. Fils-Aims downplays the threat by relying on brands such as Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros. and Brain age. Onlive’s announcement has coincided with Nintendo’s release of Wiiware, which is Nintendo’s form of downloadable games.

Our take? Fils-Aime is exactly right. The branding is still there with Wii and Xbox for the matter. Until OnLive can get those licensing for those brands there is no way games would give up their consoles. How much buzz was out there for the latest Halo release? the Halo release was pretty crazy. Gamers are perhaps the most hard core followers almost a cult following. You maintain the greatness of a brand then you will maintain your following. OnLive will not only need to attract high quality game makers, but create gaming franchises with exlcusive game makers.
Test your bandwidth on Speakeasy to test your bandwidth. I’ve got Comcast Cable Internet my internet connection tested at 8650 kpbs or 8.650 Mpbs download speed. According to OnLive you will need atleast 5 Mpbs for High Definition resolution otherwise you will be downgraded to a low resolution.
Bandwidth Requirements of OnLive Games:
1.5 Mpbs Standard Definition
5 Mpbs High Definition (1280 x 720) – 720 line resolution
Looks like OnLive has lined up some great partners to develop their games:
EA Sports, UBI Soft, Take Two Interactive, Eidos, Nvidia, Atari, Codemasters, Epic Games, THQ, 2D Boy.

OnLive looks to be pretty straight forward. The gaming system looks to be a small compact system where all you have to do is connect the “microconsole” to video output and connect the controller you should be good to go. The console should then contact the OnLive gaming center over your broadband connection.

Onlive announced that beta sign up is available for Summer of ‘09, the release of the actual gaming system is set to the end of this year. Perhaps the release will be timed with the upcoming Christmas shopping season.
